Is it possible to have 2 languages running in Anki. It relates to loading 2 or more Model Decks. If not advisable, can you have more than one Anki application running. Havre tried but seems to point to existing files.

  • Yes it's possible. You can do it in two different ways. The first is to create separate profiles for each language. Then you load a language in the specific profile. The disadvantage is if you use ankiweb to synch with. Each profile needs a separate ankiweb email address; so you could use different addresses if you have them.

The second method is done with only one profile (the default). You load the model deck and just change the name in the decks to something easy to keep track of. Then you only need one account on ankiweb.

  • Thanks James. It seems the first option could get messy remembering which profile updates to which ankiweb. The second option seems simpler. However I am just starting out here and not that conversant with Anki just yet. I have loaded the Model Deck and gone through the process as described (Exclamation!) in the videos and then renamed the deck with my first language (My Deutsch Deck). Under that I see Minimal Pairs & Everything Else. I am not sure if you mean add another Model Deck for my next language, for example French, because another Model Deck can't be added - no notes updated. So forgive me for these seemingly simple questions, but if the Model Deck previously loaded, is now renamed as above, and the sub-decks are what I would think are for that language (Deutsch), how do I show the other language. • I started out with the first approach and just named my profiles with the variation of my name in the language, but had to change because of ankiweb. I actually have three languages going now (one of which I already know) and I just renamed them FrenchModelDeck, GermanModelDeck and SpanishModelDeck as the top-level entries. If you get the sublevels mixed in the wrong language, just click-drag it to the right top-level entry. That worked for me...

  • Okay, but can you load in more than one Model deck so that you can set-up & re-name the Decks as you have. I can't import another Model Deck, I suspect because if I click 'Browse' on frontsScreen, then I see cards against the first Model Deck that I loaded. I understand that notes that already exist, cannot be added. So I understand what you are doing and it seems that your three languages are in 3 separate Model Decks, but not sure how you get the other Model Decks imported. I went through the process of deleting the notes in the Model Deck I imported as per video 3, but as I said, there is still information in the decks when I view 'Browse'.
Sorry for all these questions and thank you so much for your patient replies. I am still pretty new to it, but I want to set it up correctly first off so that I do not have to start again. Just want to get into learning.

  • I think that when I updated a deck, it had to be dragged into the high-level label. I probably quit anki between each step to get it synched and not confused, but honestly I don't remember now... When I browse, I get headings for the various renamed decks.

  • James, just read through a tutorial posted by Gabriel on setting up more than one Model Deck. Got it set up in Anki now. Thanks so much. I really appreciate your assistance. Hew
