Is it possible to load more than one Model Deck (Gabriel's Model Deck). Have tried and does not load any new notes. I want to set up another language.

  • Many of you have noticed that when you want to create a new model deck (if you're studying multiple languages), if you simply double-click on a copy of Model Deck.apkg, you get this notice, which isn't particularly useful:

Here's how you create a duplicate model deck.

    1. Open up Anki and get to the "Decks" window. It should look like this:Screen Shot 2014-11-14 at 2.38.20 PM

    2. On the bottom of that window, click "Create Deck". It'll ask you for the new deck's name, so name it whatever you'd like:Screen Shot 2014-11-14 at 2.39.01 PM

    3. Do that two more times, creating a deck for 1. Minimal Pairs and a deck for 2. Everything Else. You should see something like this:Screen Shot 2014-11-14 at 2.40.36 PM

    4. Now click and drag your new "1. Minimal Pairs" deck onto your new Model Deck (in my case, I'm going to drag it on top of "Model Deck Two"):Screen Shot 2014-11-14 at 2.42.50 PM

    5. Do the same for "2. Everything Else."

    6. You're almost done. Now we just need to change the deck options, so that they're not just the default options (I like to see minimal pairs more often than the defaults, and I like to see everything else significantly less often). To do that, click on the gear icon to the left of your "1. Minimal Pairs" deck and select "Options":Screen Shot 2014-11-14 at 2.46.04 PM

    7. On the top of this window, you'll see the "Default" options set selected. Choose the "Pronunciation" options instead, and then, on the bottom right, hit "OK".

    8. Do the same thing for "2. Everything Else," except this time, select "Grammar."

    9. Last, do the same thing (choose "Grammar") for your new model deck (in my case, "Model Deck Two")

    10. You're all set. When you're ready to add new cards, be sure to choose your new deck:

One can not help to have a good crack at learning a language with this support and the resources you and your team have developed. There are heaps of language learning methods and tools 'out there', but your approach seems different and fresh, especially with the early focus on pronunciation. Looking forward to the challenge. Many thanks again, Hew

When decompressed it gave a folder, and the only file in that folder that opened Anki is called collection.anki2. Opening this file gives a message that says ".anki2 files are not designed for importing. If you're trying to restore from a backup, please see the 'Backups' section of the user manual." Is there another place that has the model deck. Could it be downloaded from the on-line Anki Popular Catagories, and if it is there already, where is it and what is it called.

Thanks for putting this together. I got stalled on the model deck for a few hours, and I was also wondering if it is all that important if I don't have it. Thanks, Fred

If I create duplicate model decks, say, Italian and French and let's take a word that exists in both languages - e.g. the word 'non' exists in both languages and means 'no' in English (also theoretically possible that a word used in both Italian and French could have totally different meanings in English, but I cannot think of an example). Whilst Italian and French have separate decks, do they also have separate note types or is there a potential issue with Anki finding duplicates in this kind of scenario?

  • Howdy. Have iMac desktop, Yosemite. Downloaded Model Deck per instructions ("Download it here" or "zip file version"). Upon double-clicking the downloaded Model Deck file, the only responding application that tried to open it was Adobe Reader, which of course, could not do it. This, even though Anki is installed and seems to work as advertised, so far. But it didn't respond to Model Deck. What did work, though, was after opening Anki itself, I chose the "Import File" button on the bottom command selection bar, then chose the Model Deck .apkg file that was in my Downloads Folder. Voila, success. I could then finish Anki Tutorial 2.
