  • I got a few emails about this!

In the the alphabetical PDF, I put in "Twenty" "Twenty-one (etc)", and skipped out writing 22,31,32,41,42,51,52,61,62,71,72,81,82,91,92,101,102,110,111,1001,10000, and 100000, largely because you're very unlikely to find those in a dictionary, which was the purpose of including an alphabetical list. Now the *real* puzzle is that everyone seems to be coming up with 604 words in that alphabetical list, but with the missing 22 words, we're up to 626 words, and in counting through my original excel doc, I still have exactly 625.

I don't have an answer for that one yet...

  • thx for the reply on this...

i thought i was losing my marbles there for a while not being able to figure out why there were only 604 vs 625 words...makes perfect sense with the numbers....

anyhow, i'm having a blast putting finding images while making the flashcards...

thx for your post on the macros and applescript! it has made the process a bit easier!

    cheers!

  • Hi ronin31,

I carefully went through both the thematic pdf list, and the pdf alphabetical list.  Neither one has exactly 625 words and there are minor variations between the two lists as well.

    Thematic List: 627 total words

-Note 1: To get 627, do not include the bolded headings, unless there is an un-bolded version of the word in the list, i.e. include 'animal', but not 'society'

-Note 2: This list is missing 'zero' and 'electronics' from the alphabetical list, which would bring the grand total up to 629 words (i.e., 627+2)

    Alphabetical List: 604 total words

    -Note 1: As Gabriel pointed out, this list excludes twenty-two additional numbers: 22, 31, 32, 41, 42, 51, 52, 61, 62, 71, 72, 81, 82, 91, 92, 101, 102, 110, 111, 1001, 10000, 100000.  This would bring the total up to 626 (i.e., 604+22)

-Note 2: Unlike the thematic list, the alphabetical list combines 'you (singular/plural)' into one entry, while the thematic list has it broken out into two entries 'you (singular)' and 'you (plural, as in "y'all")'.  Separating 'you' into two entries instead of one would bring the total up to 627 (i.e., 604+22+1)

-Note 3:  This list is missing 'noun' and 'relationship' from the thematic list, which would bring the grand total up to 629 words (i.e., 604+22+1+2).  Now the total number of words from the thematic and alphabetical list match.  629 is the magic number of words you are striving for if you are going by the pdf word lists

Note: It is possible that later versions of the book or the purchasable word lists adjust for these discrepancies, but for the pdf versions of the thematic and alphabetical lists (found using a basic google search), you won't get exactly 625.  Hope this helps!
