I am ready to begin entering word flash cards into anki. Does Gabe's 625 word list for purchase include sound files or only words and pictures? Also, do they denote gender? Lastly, does the pronunciation trainer cover minimal pairs and are they even significant in Spanish or is it sufficient to forge ahead without this? I seem to recall the book as having identified Spanish as being straightforward so the pronunciation trainer may not be so necessary for this language. Does anyone have any input based on your experiences?

  • Hi,

If you go The Shop --> Word Lists you will sample pages for the French Word List. You will see that there is quite a bit of information about the words. The words aren't presented individually and there aren't any sound files.

As for the Pronunciation Trainer, I do think it's helpful as it brings up some nuances of pronunciation beyond the standard "Spanish pronunciation always follows these set rules and if it doesn't there will be an accent mark" that you learn when you study Spanish. This is done in the Picture Card section. I did not find the Minimal Pairs that helpful because the pronunciation is often altered to emphasize the sound being differentiated, rather than pronouncing the word normally, and that was distracting. But there are distinctions to be made. The Pronunciation Trainer will give you many beautiful images and sound files to use, and I think it's a very good way to start hearing and practicing Spanish and picking up vocabulary.

  • @Andrea: Thanks for answering :)

One correction: The finalized word lists DO include a folder of sound files, to help save time when you're first making cards.

  • Oops, of course. I used them to make my cards!

I also mixed up pronunciation and word stress in my answer.

In any case I think the trainers and word lists are well worth purchasing.

  • Thank you for your responses...I got both the pronunciation trainer and the word list! So when the final word list is released, will my next step be to make anki cards using the picture provided for all of the words covered on a given page? And is there an ETA for the final version of the Spanish word list?

  • Great! If you look at the sample French word list on the Fluent Forever website, The Shop --> Word Lists you'll see that it does not have individual pictures, rather scenes that include related words. But that's ok, because if you want to follow the F-F method, you'll be finding your own images when you create your flashcards. Doing this helps you remember the word later, and you're learning while you're creating the flashcard.

I can't find a discussion of this aspect of the method on the website just now. It would be in the Kickstarter materials, and of course in the Fluent Forever book.

You can check The Shop --> ETAs for release dates and progress notes.

  • The final Latin American Spanish list should be ready at the end of the week--and the European Spanish not long after. Thanks for your patience while we finalized them!

  • Thank you! Now I have a specific question about a card in the Spanish pronunciation trainer and I apologize if this the wrong forum in which to bring this up...The written word "album yugoslavo" does not seem to match the spoken word provided and the sound for the letter 'y' presented on this card does not seem to be the correct sound in either the letter or word sound provided - and the two don't seem to match each other either. May you please verify this?

  • Thank you for bringing that to our attention, Marianki! We'll investigate it for the updated version.
