Usefulness of comprehension cards once advanced

Hi, I was wondering whther there was still any merit in making two flashcards for every new word once past learning the top 1000/2000 most frequent. I still want to continue picking out words from the frequency list as well as words I see frequently enough in TV and books but only want to have a passive understanding instead of trying to get them into my active vocabulary.
