When quizzed on example characters, should I aim to answer by thinking of the character’s mnemonic image, pronunciation and layout?

So first off, definitely don’t memorize ALL the strokes of the example words – as you’ve gathered, it’s way too hard. The example words are only there so you can see how the radical can fit into some words, and to plant some very faint memories in your head that will get reinforced later, when you actually learn those words.

It’s only necessary to think, “Oh, yeah, this radical shows up in ‘prison’ and it encloses most of the rest of the radicals."
