When a word has multiple definitions, how do I know which one to focus on learning?

When a word has multiple definitions, if you’re just starting out at a beginner or even intermediate level, we’d recommend sticking with definition 1 or maybe 1 + 2 for most words. This means that when you look up a word, and we will use Google in this example, you use the first (easiest) or first and second definition (second being a bit harder):

You can gradually expand your definitions as you encounter the word in new sentences. Your goal at this point is just to get some aspect of the word in your head and move on. Later, when you’ve mastered that first definition of the word, adding additional definitions is going to be much, much easier.
