Why is the number of "due" cards in my deck going down?

If you have noticed that the “Due” cards are going down and disappearing every time you open Anki, you might be wondering if there is a problem or where the cards have gone.

Below is an example of what you may see. The day before you opened Anki, it said 30 cards due. Today you noticed that it only says 5 cards.

Before we can determine whether there is anything wrong, we need to review your the Anki Stats. Click on the graph bar icon to open your Anki Stats. This is located at the top right-hand corner.

A pop-up will appear of your Anki Stats. Scroll down to “Card Types”. It should look something like this:

If you look at your Anki Stats under “Card Types”, you’ll notice that all of your cards are deemed as "Mature". This means that Anki has recognized that you actually know all your cards really well, and all of them are already in your long-term memory. Therefore Anki doesn't show you these cards that you already know so well. This is the way that Anki actually works.

Therefore, the reason you don't see any more "Due" cards is actually that you've studied all of the cards several times in your “Pronunciation Deck” and the “Model Deck", and you actually know all of your cards so well already.

Remember, Anki is a "Spaced Repetition Software". This means that when you know a card really well, then the space between the time you recently studied it and the next time you see it again gets longer and longer. Since all of your cards are "Mature", Anki knows that you actually know ALL of your cards so well, so the space between your last review of a card and the next one would be quite long.

It is normal to see the "Due" cards number get lower and lower, to the point that there are days where you have 0 "Due" cards.

For more information, we have a post about those "intervals" or spacing in Anki here: https://fluent-forever.com/the-method/ under the heading "Use Anki for Vocabulary and Grammar".

So there’s nothing wrong? What do I do now to ensure that I have cards to study?

As the existing cards in your deck are “mature”, it is strongly recommended to move onto the next step of the Fluent Forever method. You already have a strong foundation with your pronunciation (Stage 1). The next step is to add new Anki cards based on Stages 2, 3, and 4. You can read more about Stages 2, 3, and 4 here: https://fluent-forever.com/the-method/, or you can check out Gabe's book at https://fluent-forever.com/the-book/ or CreativeLive video course.
