If you've opened the app and thought any of the following:
- How do I use the app?
- Where do I start?
- What are all these things on the screen?
...then this article is for you!
Your Guide to Getting Started in the Fluent Forever App
The app’s Home screen shows you recommended tasks (Today's Goals) every day. That’s your built-in roadmap.
But if you’d like a bit more structure, this guide will walk you through what to focus on at each stage so you can stay consistent, enjoy the process, and build skills step-by-step.
The Fluent Forever 4-Step Method
Our method guides everything you’ll do in the app:
Stage 1: Orientation & Pronunciation
When you first log in, you’ll answer a few questions about your level and your comfort with pronunciation. From there, you'll see various different tiles on your Home screen, but for now, we'll focus on the key ones.
Today’s Goals: Your daily guide for what to do next.
Review Flashcards: Review cards you’ve created — this builds long-term memory.
Pronunciation: Where you’ll find pronunciation lessons and create pronunciation cards.
Don't see Today's Goals? + Learning Spanish, French or Italian?
You're probably set to beginner in the app.
If you’re set to Beginner, you’ll first need to complete the initial lessons* that appear on your Home screen. Once those are done, they’ll disappear and be replaced with Today's Goals and Streak Tasks.
If you don’t want to complete the intro lessons and want to start seeing Today's Goals/Streak Tasks, you can switch your level to Intermediate or Advanced in your app settings.
However, please note that changing your level also adjusts how the app works:
- Beginner: Starts from the basics, including pronunciation training and access to all word and grammar sets.
Intermediate/Advanced: Assumes you already know the basics, so beginner content (like pronunciation sets) won’t appear, and Today's Goals will be adapted accordingly.
*Note: Lessons feature only available for Spanish, French, and Italian.
On your first sessions, keep it simple:
Go to Pronunciation and start watching the videos.
If you feel ready, feel free to move on to Ear Training. But don't do this before you've finished all of Vowels, Spelling Rules, and Consonants.
That’s it. Short, simple, and effective.
Stage 2: Building the Habit
Continue to complete your pronunciation training. As you continue, alternate between:
Completing your pronunciation lessons (to tune your ears)
Doing a review session (to reinforce memory of the ear training cards you have created)
Stick with this rhythm until you feel comfortable with the sound system of your new language.
Don't rush ahead to creating cards in other tiles - get pronunciation down first and you'll find everything else in the app runs smoothly from there.
Stage 3: Add Words for Variety
Once you’ve made progress in pronunciation, it’s time to add some simple vocabulary flashcards.
Go to the Words section and start working on the words in the sets.
Tips:
Tap on the words you’d like to learn and create cards for them.
Choose 1–4 images for the card, then tap Add to Deck.
Swipe right on words you already know (Know It) or don’t care to learn (Skip It).
Each set contains multiple words. There are 89 sets in total, and they’re linked to Grammar sets — so when you finish the words in Set 1, the related Grammar set will be disappear too.
Adding words gives your reviews more variety and makes them more fun.
Here's an overview of all the sections you'll find in the Words section:
Word Lists: 89 sets of words to add to flashcards.
Word Look Up: Search any word and add it to a flashcard.
At this point, many wonder, "How did you choose these words for the sets?!"
You'll find the answer to that here: Why are we learning these particular words in the app?
Stage 4: Grammar & Sentences
Once pronunciation feels comfortable and you’ve built up some vocabulary, start exploring the Grammar section.
Here you’ll find example sentences.
Tips:
Stick to simpler sentences if you’re a beginner.
Pick images that illustrate the sentence’s story.
Create a selection of flashcards types. Our tip: always add the Vocabulary card, add Word Order only if it’s surprising, and add Dictionary Form only if it’s not obvious.
This is where words start linking together, and your language begins to feel alive.
Here's an overview of all the sections you'll find in the Grammar section:
Sentence sets: 89 sets of words linked to sentences of various levels, to add to flashcards.
Search sentences: Search the bank of pre-made sentences.
Grammar Guide: A comprehensive guide to the grammar of your target language.
Add Your Content: Add your own words, sentences and phrases. Generate translations and turn everything into flashcards.
Grammar Articles*: Articles explaining particular features of the grammar of the target language.
Everyday Topics*: Pre-made sentences created for everyday situations.
*Selected languages only.
Stage 5: Personalize Your Learning
The pre-made sets are just the beginning.
The real power of the app is in creating your own custom content:
Add words and sentences that match your life, interests, and goals.
Personal flashcards are far more memorable → e.g., “My dog’s name is Max” (using your actual dog's name) sticks better than “I like dogs.”
You can use the Add Your Content tool to make the app truly yours.
How to use the Add Your Content feature?
Locate the Add Your Content tile on the Home screen.
Here you can add sentences, phrases, or single words to create flashcards with them.
You will also find an automatic translation tool that will allow you to convert your sentences to your target language effortlessly.
Type your sentence in English in the top bar, and then click on Generate Translation.
Now all you have to do is click the Add button at the top of the screen, and after that, you can choose the images you want to use for your flashcard:
Stage 6: Speak with Native Speakers
The final step of the method is practice. This is where Fluent Forever Online Coaching comes in.
Our coaching program connects you with tutors who can help you:
Create personalized example sentences.
Use your own stories and experiences in your flashcards.
Practice speaking in a supportive, structured way.
This step transforms your knowledge into real fluency.
You can see our Online Coaching offers on our Pricing and Products page.
